I played Stadium though, there wasn't a story at all but the minigames were fun.

Minigames or sidequests?

Depends. Some minigames are annoying, and some sidequests are tedious. Good minigames generallly have a lot of replay value, but it's rare that you get a powerful item from a minigame that isn't part of a sidequest, so I ewould have to say sidequests.

Linear (story/map) like FFX or open like FFVII and FFIII

Open. That was one of my only gripes with FFX, the lack of a world map. I kinda missed it in FFXII too.
