ummm...I haven't read this entire topic, but....how did it go from a discussion about normal too....this?

But, down to business. I think there is no such thing as normal, because I have NEVER met anybody like what people think the "Normal" person is. BUT, I do believe that we need normalcy in a society to function as we do. What I think normalcy means in that context is not the definition of the word, but simply just a something that means we must follow a set of rules and laws.

I think the best way I can define normalcy is to define deviancy...as described in my sociology textbook.

Behavior that departs from societal or group norms. And, now that I think about it, doesn't really describe much. But, what it also says is that in the US, the norm is to work hard and succeed in making money. That is what I think the concept of normalcy is meant to mean and to be normal is to follow the nornms of society. So, truly, to be normal, you either have to give up on making money, give up working hard to make money(EX: crime), give up both, or have completely different goals from those to be abnormal, which most people aren't.

I see what you mean in that context. You'll have to pardon us sometimes we get into some very heavy topics, then we go off on a tangent and start joking around, but the topic is still serious Very Happy

Now that sounds more like what normal should be, and it's a shame that different sections of society seem to abuse the word for their own ends, as a way of dividing themselves from people they don't perceive to match their group, or whatever. It's the closed-minded, biased people that use it the most. You do something they don't like, they slap the "you're not normal" condemnation on you, ensuring that other groups also folow suit. It's about vying for control, for the upper hand, and it disgusts me that people aren't more accepting of others and just leave the "normal" as it should be.

I'm glad you gave us a word instead of "normalness", I always try and use the correct terminology. Looks like "normalness" will just have to go into the diary of invented words! Wink
