Found a couple of old text files- one soong, one poem

Post by JET73L on Mon Sep 01, 2008 7:02 pm

Found these while I was retyping all the text files from my old, damaged laptop to my more recent one. I found a letter that I was able to send in to the Imponderables author (explanations for things like how aspirin only affects the pained area, or why you sometimes see an old boot on a fencepost). I was yet unable to finish transcribing what I've written so far of my FFVII novellisation, but I did find these.

The first is to be read in a way similar to Poe's The Raven, or one of Watterson's nightmare poems from Calvin and Hobbes.
An Insomniatic Nightmare (Lyrics copyright J.R. Miller 2006, title probably same)
As I lay awake, a sleepless, dreamful night I will be having,
watching through the darkness for the creatures lurking ther,
I espy the shadows closing, closing in to eat what little
light is left, and hear a warning that of this I should beware.

Ghastly forms the shadows taking, hope for daylight to be breaking
to be dashed as the clock in the hall starts chiming one,
I am feared my heart can't stand to pull me through the darkness and that
all the shadowed whispers of the night have just begun.

Outside, all the crickets chirping have been silenced by an owl,
all the om'nous chirping gone, the void been filled with something worse.
Slowly, then, they seem to come back, but the tone is slightly different,
death-watch beetles seem to have replaced them, having brought their curse.

Sounds and vision both obscured by what I hope to be illusions,
spiders crawl upon my skin and smells of brimstone fill the air.
Seemingly the signs of such dark creatures rarely mentioned
have arrived and turned the darkness of the room into their lair.

Slowly, softly, as a reddish glow begins arising (is it
my mind? is it my eyes? Or is something called to here?),
the whispers from the darkness seem to grow much more intense,
rising whispers up to chanting, then to howls inspiring fear.

Quickly, sharply, with a flourish, from the reddish glow is rising
one of the worst silhouettes a man could ever see.
Spiral horns, a cloak of darkness, 'tis the evil's royal highness,
'tis Old Nick, the Prince of Shadows, from the darkness rising free!

Reachingfor the bedside table, feeling weak and hardly able
e'en to feel the sep'rate beads upon my necklaced crucifix-
it is not my nerves because the table has been emptied
of all items on it, and my hope falls like a ton of bricks.

Only hope could save the wretched, doomed by lack of faith,
for if there was a devil, surely then there must exist a god?
Herding lost sheep back to pasture, like a shepherd, keeping away
vile wolves and wicked devils, trust and hope his crook and rod.

Sensing hesitation in the creature there before me
it was all the miracle I needed to restore my long-gone trust.
Clasping hands in prayer, I begged deliv'rance , and it found me,
with the sky outside the window turning to the red of rust.

Minor demons disappearing as the sun's disc started nearing,
it was sunrise and the light delivered safety as was told before.
Form of darkness now retreating, and my soul they won't be eating,
long as my beliefs in those above were strong, forevermore.

I like that one. Wrote it between three and five A.M. one summer, I think two years ago. Was staying in the basement and drinking a lot of iced tea, because the AC wasn't cooling my room efficiently.

Wish of Forgiveness (Music and Lyrics copyright J.R. Miller, 2007)
I'd never felt
this way before
it's just been heard
in myth and lore
this is cupid's arrow, shooting through my heart

the happiness,
the daytime dreams,
I wished to talk,
but how it seems,
that I can't possibly... ever... know where to start.

From the moment I first met you,
I knew I was in love,
but the hardest part of telling you
is giving myself that one small shove.

Had I told you earlier,
things, they might have changed.
At least we were friends, but all my fault,
our relationship was rearranged.

I'd explained my feelings,
but i'd explained too late.
You'd already found that someone else,
and you and he were doing great.

Unwanting to do anything
that would have caused you harm,
I did stand back, and futhrer still,
as you two walked off arm in arm.

Rarelyagain did I speak to you,
the pain of talking and avoidance alike,
changed wondrous cupid's arrow
into a painful spike.

Had I hid my feelings,
would our friendship have stayed well,
or would tension have festered,
and sent our friendship straight to hell?

The damage irreversible,
anything would make it worse,
I held back to quit the pain
and poured it out into these verse.

Just one last thing I wished,
because you didn't love me back:
If only could make things right,
put at least our friendship... back on track...

I can't stand this one. I wrote it for a girl I knew in three days with one night of sleep, and I forgot about chords, so the music was a bit flat (as in shallow, not as in half a note too low). Ironically, when I met her I thought she was someone else I had known, and the blasted obsession stuck even after I realised they weren't the same person, and even later when I realised she was, in fact, annoying.

So, found those when retyping the files from my old laptop. I like the first and have thought about trying to get it published (couldn't figure out who to send it to), the second I didn't particularly like. Figured I may as well post them both here. It'll be nice to see what you all think of them, and it'll be incentive for the FFNet people who used to be here to come back, at least for a while.

I adore the first one JET, it's totally awesome!! I like the old-worldly type language you used and some of that really dark imagery. Kinda makes me think of Halloween and all the things that people with vivid imaginations love about it ^^

The second one is still good....but it's really out of character. I can tell you lost some sleep over that one, it's nice but it's kinda awkward. But then love does that to you, so I can understand.

I'd love to see more of this kind of thing from you JET, you have quite the talent Smile

Thank you. Yeah, the first one is certainly one of my favourites, the second... I actually just posted it for comparison, it really wasn't even me at the time, let alone the me of now.
I'll certainly try to write more often, but I really only get a decent song or poem when i'm inspired, rather than when I want to.

Coolies. I'm currently working on an arrangement of Theme For Vent from Unlimited Saga, as a preliminary for someone who might want me to write a score for their RPG. I'll post that when it's done ^^
