Just wondering what it was.

Post by JET73L on Tue Oct 16, 2007 8:34 pm

Whilst reading, I recently came across a description of a creature that was a parody of something in mythology. As the book was told from the point of view of another species, it never stated the name of the creature, and the topic has been bothering me ever since. It is a silvery scaled being who lives underwater, and can shapeshift or cast the illusion of shapeshifting. It is a british local mythology, probably in the area of England (couldn't get an exact location, it's near a moor is all I know) and their name in the book was Dori or Dwergi or something like that (that's probably not what they are called in legends or fairy tales, but if it helps.)

I remember reading of something along those lines in an old book of legends, but I couldn't recall exactly what it was. Just wondering if any of you had some idea.

it could be a neck but silvery scale confuses me (if it shapeshifts how do you know it's true form?)

but here a neck:

Neck
A neck is a shapeshifting water faery who is an expert harper and singer. It is likely they possess no gender or concrete form, but usually appear to humans as poor reflections of themselves. They are seductive and cunning and should be avoided.

if not... other suggestion:
.... well I find nothing now... maybe later

Kind of like a nixie, but not female? I don't know, it could be... It's mainly the silvery scales reminded me of something in particular, rather than just shapeshifting water-folk in general.

PS: I just remembered, they were called Dorig in the book. It wasn't a human language, though.

Very strange...I cannot find anything about such a creature. I tried ''Dorig'', hoping to find the source of this reference...but alas, I've had no luck.

Although this may not be right, and I know its not British legend, it sounds oddly like an H.P. Lovecraft creature. I can't remember the name of the being, but I remembered it could shapeshift and when it was first seen in the short story, it was only as a silvery blur...

Again, I'm not too confident about this simply because it has very little to do with British mythology and its been almost three years since I've read the H.P. Lovecraft stories.
